Abstract

The rapid evolution of digital media has significantly transformed the communication landscape, posing challenges and opportunities for communication education. This study aims to explore the implications of digital media on traditional communication models and how these changes necessitate a reevaluation of Communication Studies curricula.

The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing document studies, focus group discussions, and interviews with communication experts to identify the future direction of media platforms, business models, and required communication competencies.

Findings suggest that media disruption, driven by the internet and social media, demands a curriculum overhaul, with a focus on digital literacy, critical media skills, and an interdisciplinary approach. The study highlights the importance of preparing future communication professionals to navigate the ethical, social, and political challenges posed by digital media.

The integration of emerging technologies such as AI and big data, along with enhanced media literacy initiatives, is crucial for fostering informed and engaged citizens in the digital era.

Introduction

Background

This study aims to analyze media development trends as the ontological foundation of Communication Studies. This review is crucial for the institutional development of Communication Studies programs, given the increasing decline of mass media outlets that are unable to sustain their existence.

Recent developments include:

  • Kompas TV laid off hundreds of employees.
  • ANTV also implemented layoffs.
  • Many print media and radio stations have become inactive.
  • Similar phenomena are occurring globally.

The rise of the internet and smartphones has fundamentally changed the production and consumption of information, marking a paradigm shift in communication.

Previously, information production and distribution were dominated by traditional mass media acting as gatekeepers. Today, information production has become democratized, enabling individuals to create and disseminate content directly to mass audiences.

This transformation has diminished the dominance of mass media and presents a significant challenge for Communication Studies, which has historically focused on analyzing mass media and preparing professionals for careers within those institutions.

Research Problems

  1. What is the future direction of media platforms?
  2. What will media business models look like in the future?
  3. What kinds of communication professions will be needed in the future?
  4. What competencies must Communication Studies programs prepare to meet workforce demands?
